GammaTime Raises $14 Million to Launch Premium Micro-Drama Platform

Margaret JamesStaff Writer

The new startup aims to build a Hollywood-caliber vertical storytelling service, signalling fresh momentum in the mobile-first micro-drama space.

GammaTime has secured a $14 million seed funding round, led by venture firms vgames and Pitango, with backing from high-profile names including Alexis Ohanian, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner. Founded by Bill Block (former Miramax CEO), Slava Mudrykh and Alex Montalvo, the company is positioning itself as the first U.S.-based premium micro-drama streaming platform.

Launching Into a Growing Format

The platform says it already offers more than 20 original vertical-formatted series spanning thrillers, true-crime and romance, with advanced mobile-first delivery across iOS and Android. According to the company, global micro-drama revenues surged 8,000 percent year-over-year in 2024, with China alone topping $7 billion in the segment.

Why Creators and Studios Should Pay Attention

For creators, GammaTime’s launch represents a meaningful opportunity: a dedicated platform built for vertical serials means a stronger distribution partner than generic short-form apps. With Hollywood executive leadership and funding behind it, the platform may bring higher production values and clearer monetization paths.

For producers and investors, the round underscores mounting confidence in mobile-first episodic formats. The blend of gaming-style analytics (predictive AI and audience-testing) with traditional storytelling presents a new model for scaling short-form serials.

Challenges Ahead

Yet the model carries risk. Monetizing vertical micro-dramas in the U.S. remains less proven than traditional streaming. The cost of higher production values and premium talent could press margins. Moreover, platform-specific competition is increasing, with several startups and existing apps angling for vertical short-form dominance.

What’s Next

GammaTime plans to roll out new titles from top Hollywood names in the coming months and scale its mobile user base via a freemium model. Its success may spur similar ventures and accelerate the broader shift toward mobile-native serial storytelling.
