At its heart, this is a familiar teen rom-com that wins by putting the right guy front and center. Dora starts out hopelessly chasing hockey star Leo, only to discover he's walking red flag after red flag. After an embarrassing public rejection, she reluctantly teams up with Troy, the school's genuinely kind hockey player, who agrees to help her win Leo over while she helps him clear his name in a gambling scandal. What begins as another makeover and flirting lesson quickly turns into a sweet slow-burn romance as Troy proves he's everything Leo isn't.
The story leans into classic rom-com tropes, but the chemistry between Dora and Troy gives it plenty of charm. As Leo's selfish behavior and shady gambling problems spiral into kidnappings, bookies, and plenty of over-the-top drama, Dora finally realizes she's been chasing the wrong guy all along. A cute college romcom with a dark (but not too dark) twist.
Someone recommended this to me when I asked for cute jealousy verticals and this absolutely delivered on that more than I expected.
Watching the villains in these though makes me wonder if bullying is really this bad in American colleges?? Granted that is probably not the most unreal thing to recur in verticals but like that was not a terrible cardigan at all. I would wear it. (Though I’m not the coolest person so don’t take my word on this)
This had a lot of really good throwaway lines that caught me off guard:
“Guys like you only want one thing: help passing math” - Dora
“I don’t do makeover montages, so I’m outta here” - Troy
“Yes she *can*…. Right?” - Chloe when Dora says Mindy can’t read 💀
Not 100% sure how I feel about the darker parts of this vertical. I might have enjoyed this more if it was a straight romcom without the mystery component. Still, it satisfied my cute jealous trope craving and that’s definitely a win in my book!
