Aurelian, an immortal with power over life and death, is driven out of the Su family just before completing a year-long protective term, despite his efforts to honor a promise made to their late patriarch. When Melinda forcibly destroys the prayer beads Aurelian had given the Su family, divine retribution kills her instantly, and Aurelian departs to aid the prestigious Shen and Cheng families instead. The Su family suffers continuous misfortune in Aurelian's absence and desperately seeks his return, but he refuses to protect them any further.
