Weeping Woman
This short film is based on an incident wherein a girl was not allowed to do the last rites of her beloved father only because she is a girl. A distant male relative was called to do it instead, even though he had no emotional connection for the deceased. The purpose of this work is not to address the big inequalities and discriminations for which my sisters-in-arms have already fought many courageous battles; but instead it seeks to highlight the smaller and more hidden acts of discrimination against women which continue to be tolerated, practiced and perpetrated in this nation on account of the apparent ‘smallness’ of such acts of injustice. It is my heart’s yearning to raise such issues from the abyss of ignominy and ignorance to the frontlines of the historic and on-going struggle for justice for women in contemporary Indian society. This film highlight the sufferings endured by countless women across our nation in the name of archaic traditions and superstitions.
